Knowing your skin type is an essential part of proper skincare. But did you know that your skin type can change over time? To determine your current skin type, follow our easy 1-step test.
- Simply wash your face with a gentle cleanser, pat dry, and wait 30 minutes without applying any other products. Then, observe your skin to see which of the following categories you fit into: oily, normal, combination, or dry/sensitive.
Keep reading to learn more about each skin type and how to care for it.
After 30 minutes...
- If your face looks shiny all over - you have Oily Skin (read on below for why this is and what you can do about it).
- If your face looks shiny only on your T-zone (forehead and nose), then you most likely have combination skin
- If your skin feels tight and looks dull - you have dry skin
- Skin feel irritated? Itchy? Uncomfortable? You have sensitive skin
- None of these things? And your pores are barely visible and skin soft then you have 'normal' skin.
Now there are some things you must bear in mind:
- Your skin type can change over time so before committing to new products, do the test above to ensure you're getting the right product for you.
- All skin types need moisturiser plus barrier repair
- Acne isn't reserved for Oily skin, no. You can even get acne on dry skin so don't treat acne with products for Oily or dry skin. Treat acne with natural ingredients proven to help acne (see below).
Oily Skin
Oily skin is a natural reaction to an overproduction of sebum which is excreted from your body's sebaceous glands. It coats your skin of moisture and protects it from becoming dry. To control oily skin, a lot of it is down to diet and hormones, but you can also consider what you're using on your skin.
Marigold is a great natural ingredient for oily skin. Its' anti-inflammatory, anti-septic and anti-microbial properties help control excess oil production. It tightens pores too and protects the skin from UV rays and free radicals. It also has anti-oxidants which are anti-aging.
Our Marigold Soap Bars are infused with Marigold Oil and dry petals which helps reduce oil production by controlling blood flow to the affected areas, helping reduce sebum excretion.
Combination Skin
Combination skin refers to skin that exhibits characteristics of both oily and dry skin. This type of skin is typically oily in the T-zone (forehead, nose, and chin) and dry on the cheeks. If you have combination skin, you may find that certain areas of your face are prone to breakouts and shine, while others feel tight and dry.
To care for combination skin, it's important to choose skincare products that are formulated for this type of skin. Turmeric soap bars are a great option, as they are enriched with Turmeric essential oil and spice, which can help to reduce the appearance of blemishes and balance the skin. Turmeric has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties that can help to soothe and protect the skin. Using a turmeric soap bar can help to regulate oil production, keeping the T-zone shine-free while nourishing and moisturizing the dry areas of the face.
Dry Skin
Dry skin is characterised by a lack of moisture and oils in the skin. It can be caused by environmental factors, such as cold temperatures and low humidity, or it can be due to genetics or a medical condition. Dry skin can be uncomfortable, as it may feel tight, flaky, and itchy.
To care for dry skin, it's important to use a soap bar that is formulated for dry skin and to avoid products that may strip the skin of its natural oils. It's also a good idea to avoid hot showers, as they can strip the skin of its natural oils, and to use a humidifier in your home to add moisture to the air.

Sensitive Skin
Sensitive skin is skin that is prone to irritation, redness, and other adverse reactions. It can be caused by a variety of factors, including genetics, environmental conditions, and certain products. Sensitive skin can be difficult to care for, as it can be sensitive to a wide range of products and ingredients.
To care for sensitive skin, it's important to use products that are formulated for sensitive skin and to avoid ingredients that may cause irritation. It's also a good idea to avoid harsh or abrasive products and to use lukewarm water when cleansing the skin.

Normal Skin
Normal skin is skin that is well-balanced and not prone to excess oil production or dryness. It is generally healthy and has a smooth, even texture. Normal skin is relatively easy to care for, as it doesn't require specialised products or routines.
To maintain healthy normal skin, it's important to follow a simple skincare routine that includes cleansing, toning, and moisturising. It's also a good idea to use a sunscreen with a high SPF to protect the skin from the sun's harmful UV rays.
